Library at St. Mary School

We have an extensive collection of books at each campus, all of which are catalogued on computer using the Dewey Decimal System. students  listening to a story in the        library at Main CampusEach class has a weekly 45-minute library session in the library. The Main Campus library is a relaxed atmosphere, including bean bag chairs for lounging after the students select their books. Students in Grades 3-8 participate in the Accelerated Reader Program. At Primary Campus, Preschool and 1st Grade students listen to a story and do an activity that corresponds with the weekly story. Like the older children, Kindergarten and 1st Grade students check out a new book each week.

The Music Program

Music class

The St. Mary School Music Program offers plenty of opportunities for students in Preschool through 8th Grade to make and learn about music. Kindergarten and Grades 1-2 present Christmas Programs each year. Grades 3-8 perform in an Annual Spring Concert. The theme of the 2010 concert was "We Sing the World Around" and was a raging success. Students at all levels also interact with a variety of instruments, including percussion instruments and recorders.

Computers and Technology

St. Mary's has a very active technology program. Students start in Kindergarten, learning the parts of a computer and exploring what technology means. By 8th Grade, students are producing PowerPoint presentations, creating their own movies, and designing a personal website. Along the way, the students learn to use Microsoft Office, to type quickly and accurately, to safely use the internet, and more.

Hands-On Science

Students in all grades rScience Lab time in Junior Higheceive science instruction that coincides with opportunities to explore the concepts with their own hands. In Junior High, students apply what they learn during instructional time in the science lab. Students us a variety of equipment including microscopes and measuring tools, as well as organic and inorganic substances. Some of the favorite activities include fetal pig dissection, making slime, and pH testing.

Spanish Instruction

Exposure to Spanish language begins in 4 Spanish Class at Main CampusYear-Old Preschool with a brief interactive lesson each week. Students in Grades K-8 receive in-depth Spanish Instruction. Students interact with the Spanish language through translated songs and children's books like The Hokey Pokey and Brown Bear, Brown Bear, Whaat Do You See. Additionally, all children in Grades K-8 learn to say the Hail Mary in Spanish.

Physical Education

All K-8 classes attend weekly gym class during which they play games, sports, and do various teKindergarten gym class at Primary Campusambuilding activities. Students in Grades 4-8 also participate in the Presidential Fitness Program.
Preschool students benefit from regular physical activity with their classroom teacher.

 

Art in Action

Preschool and Kindergarten students have artistic experiences centered around themes of study throughout the year. Students in Grades 1-8 receive formal art instruction each week. Many student art projects are entered into state and local competitions. Student artwork can also be seen on display at Che Cosa coffee house in Mt. Clemens during the month of April.
