St. Mary School thanks PAC and the Enrichment Committee for providing such wonderful educational (and fun!) opportunities for our students to learn.

Coming Soon...

African Acrobats - February 28
Chinese Acrobats - March 16

Looking forward to the Return of The Brainstormers!

The Brainstormers creative writing program was at Main Campus with their "Takeoff Show" on January 5th. The kids laughed at the crazy stories they created as the Brainstormers acted out their improvisational cues. All of the students in Grades 2-8 are busy writing creative stories. Please encourage your young writers at home!

The Brainstormers will choose at least one story per grade to act out when they return for their "Skywriter Shows" on March 26th! During these shows, the Brainstormers will celebrate our young author's accomplishments with "world premier" productions of their stories! In both shows, many young actors will be called upon to participate on stage with the troupe. This highly acclaimed program is sponsored by PAC, and is funded in part by the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and the Michigan Humanities Council.

Michael Glenn Monroe Visits Primary Campus

Award-winning artist and popular children's book illustrator Michael Glenn Monroe paid a visit to Primary Campus this week. He shared his personal story of becoming an artist with the children, provided drawing lessons, and invited the young artists to create their own "Humbugs."

Pre-K-1 Fun with Cutting Edge Gymnastics

Cutting Edge Gymnastics came to Primary Campus on November 22 and November 22. Preschool through 1st Grade enjoyed two days of tumbling, balancing, and gymnastic fun!

Wildlife Encounters Returns!

Wildlife Encounters returned to St. Mary School on December 7. This time, students at both campuses participated in the "Wild About Reptiles and Amphibians" program. It was a hit with children of all grade levels

Living in Space

Wildlife Encounters

Wildlife Encounters recently visited both campuses to teach the children about wildlife conservation. The students saw real animals from the Rainforest and had an opportunity to interact with some of the animals as well.

2010-2111 School Year Assemblies

Memory Madness

With "Memory Madness... The Super Student Memory Show" our 2nd thru 5th graders learned the secrets of photographic memory. In a TV game show setting, students will learn how to remember dates, facts, names, rules, stories and more. There was non-stop action as contestants square off for great prizes. Racer lights, upbeat music and hilarious student competition add to the excitement as they learn techniques that can dramatically improve their performance in the classroom - and with homework!

This assembly was sponsored in part with a grant from the Michigan Arts and Humanities Touring Program.

PaleoJoe

St. Mary School welcomed PaleoJoe on March 16th, for 3 different programs appropriately tailored to grade levels Pre-8.

Worlds of Music Tour

Main Campus kicked off the 2011 "Celebrate Our World" Festivities with a Worlds of Music tour presented by Guy Louis. The students in Grades 2-8 experienced a range of musical instruments and learned how music is integral to history and culture. With laughing, dancing, and chanting to the sounds of Native American drums, the European lute of the Renaissance, percussion from Africa, and a sitar from India, the children truly celebrated our world!

GaZima Games

Saint Mary Alumnus Greg Zima (son of 5th Grade teacher Ms. Dorothy Zima) and founder of SanDiego-based GaZima Games brought his games and talents to Main Campus. Greg spoke to 2nd through 8th Graders about the importance of education and the steps they can take toward building a career in the board game industry.

Pint-Size Heroes

Students in Grades 2-8 attended an age-appropriate educational program sponsored by the American Red Cross about the importance of blood donation. Several weeks later, our school hosted a blood drive as a follow-up to the student presentations. All students recruited parents and guardians to donate blood, and Junior High students had an opportunity to volunteer at the blood drive.

Guy Louis

Guy Louis returned to Primary Campus in November 2010 with a Native American-themed presentation entitled "The Chautauqua Express". During the program, Guy brought his collection of Native American musical instruments. He explained which tribes used the various instruments, what they were used for, and demonstrated how to play them. This program was sponsored in part by the Michigan Humanities Council. The students had an opportunity to try the instruments out, make music, and dance with Guy Louis.

Allergy Awareness

All students in Grades 1-8 attended an assembly on Allergy Awareness in October 2010. The presenter played music on a variety of instruments while he taught students about food allergies.

Fire Safety

Students at Primary Campus were visited by a firefighter and Fire-Pup to learn fire safety tips. Children were reminded of important safety skills and concepts such as stop, drop and roll; deciding on a family meeting place in the event of a fire; to always crawl through a smokey room; and to call 911 when there is an emergency.

Dr. Marcia McEvoy

In September 2010, the school was visited by Dr. Marcia McEvoy, a psychologist that has extensively studied aggressive behavior and bullying in schools. Dr. McEvoy worked with the staff, presented an informational meeting for parents on aggressive behavior, and spent three days meeting extensively with each Kindergarten - Eighth Grade class. Using age appropriate language and role-play scenarios, Dr. McEvoy helped all children understand what mean behavior is and how this differs from annoying behavior. She also demonstrated many tools and strategies that "targeted" students can use to stop mean behavior and constructively seek help for problems they cannot handle themselves. All students were also taught the importance of being a good bystander and speaking up to help when they see one person being mistreated by another. The phrase "we don't do that here" rings true for mean behavior at St. Mary School.
